About Us

The Vista del Mar MAKO Foundation was established in 2005 by parents of students of Vista del Mar Elementary and Middle school. It is a volunteer-led, non-profit organization which is dedicated to providing financial support for the educational excellence and enrichment programs of students at Vista del Mar Elementary and Middle school. The MAKO name originated as a mascot for the school, symbolizing the school’s spirit as well as representing the philosophy of the foundation: “Maximizing Academics Knowledge and Opportunity”.

In the first year the foundation held an annual membership kick-off and association meeting at the Heritage Grille at the Talega Golf and Country Club, sponsored by local businesses. The funds raised went to the school’s computer lab and physical education program. The following year, as part of the membership drive community sponsorship raised funds for the “MAKO Wall of Giving”. The Wall, created by Kirk Waterman of Waterman Creations situated in the main room of the school, features the names of the Wall of Giving sponsors and all of the MAKO Foundation members.

In addition to the membership drive and sponsorship donations, the MAKO Foundation relies on an annual fundraiser as a significant source of income. The first main event was a nostalgic 80’s themed “Parent’s Prom Night” featuring the band Flock of 80’s, silent and live auctions. It was hugely successful raising over $30,000 in one evening. The funds raised went directly back to the school to upgrade the middle school’s computer graphics classroom and to the elementary school’s technology instructional center.

Currently the foundation hosts a membership drive, community sponsorship and two yearly fundraising events. Added will be the opportunity for businesses to advertise with the foundation on the website reaching over 1,110 families in San Clemente. The main goal is to gain participation from all parents of the school and community. The hope is to establish a culture of giving for Vista del Mar families and businesses in order to allow for consistency in program offerings every year.

The Foundation is most grateful for the support of all parents, families and the community for all their support. The programs and materials gathered will allow for Vista del Mar schools the ability to earn outstanding educational experience.

The MAKO Foundation is incorporated as a non-profit 501(c) 3, organized under the California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation Law for charitable and public purposes. All donations or contributions are tax deductible.
