Principals’ Letter: A Message From Sandra McKinney

It is a great honor to have been selected to serve as the new principal of Vista del Mar Middle School. Vista has a long history of academic success and is well known for being a pillar in the community. I look forward to working with the dedicated staff, outstanding students and supportive parents. I am confident that by working together, we will continue to build upon Vista’s high academic standards, rich learning environment and nurturing atmosphere where students can grow academically and socially. I have heard many wonderful things about our school and am excited to join the Mako team!

The 2013-2014 school year promises to be an amazing year for the Makos! Our school continues to grow with current enrollment projections at approximately 585 students. With the help of our staff and the wonderful families in the MAKO Foundation and PTA, our students continue to reach new heights in their accomplishments and growth as young adults. Our Academic Performance Index rose to 930 for 2011-2012 school year and we ranked 10 out of 10 in statewide rankings. Vista was one of only two CUSD schools to earn a ranking of 9 out of 10 in similar school rankings. In addition, we were recognized as a member of the Honor Roll by California Business for Education Excellence for the third year in a row. Many of our Makos qualified for County Competition and two students went on to state competition. At the state competition BOTH students qualified for and competed at the National History Day Competition in College Park, Maryland. Lastly, the MAKO Foundation funded a Common Core Research Program for our teachers and made it possible for 20 students to participate in SRLA where they completed the LA Marathon.

With all of the current budget concerns that most schools are facing, it is wonderful to shield our students from these setbacks with so much support from our families. Our students do not feel as much of the pinch of fiscal issues because we have such a wonderful MAKO Foundation and PTA. Our entire staff appreciates the continual assistance that we receive and our students benefit from the many wonderful learning opportunities provided by the Foundation and PTA.

I am anxious for the upcoming school year to begin and I am looking forward to hearing your ideas, hopes and dreams for OUR school! Please feel free to stop by and say hello, as my door is always open.

Sincerely,
Sandra McKinney
